PHILOSOPHIA PERENNIS Vol 2 - The Perennial Philosophy - the timeless laws of Existence

What would happen if the fundamental laws of Nature , the timeless laws of existence change every day?. What would happen if one day water evaporates at 100 degrees and another day at 500 degrees ? There will be utter confusion and chaos all around. But existence functions in a consistent way and in the Universe there exists no chaos and only cosmos, the word introduced by Pythagoras which means order , rhythm, harmony. It is believed that Pythagoras has learnt about Prakrithi and Purush from the Indian sages and his Law of Necessity and Law of Power are rooted in Indian teachings. Our body is Prakrithi, which follows the law of necessity i.e for the body there is childhood , youth , old age and decay stages. Even the body of a buddha has no exception to the law of necessity. After youth he will become old and after old age he will die.Nature is not going to be different ,it is a very rigid law. . That is the timeless law of Existence , the perennial philosophy, Philosophia Perennis.

In this book Osho brings insight into the ancient and little known teachings of Pythagoras by giving commentaries on the remaining part of' The Golden Verses Of Pythagoras.' The Verses called as Sutras by osho are divided into three parts, they are known as the three Ps of Pythagoras: Preparation, Purification and Perfection. Preparation is the introductory part, to create a great thirst in you. The second part is purification, which means to drop all conditionings and all ideologies.Perfection is the third part which starts happening of its own accord when the first two parts are over. The purification and perfection parts are dealt with in this volume.

Vegetarianism functions as a purification. Pythagoras introduced vegetarianism for the first time to the west. All life forms are interrelated and interdependent. To destroy other animals is inhuman and ugly. Man has to learn how to live in friendship with nature and with animals and creatures. Live totally and you are finished with it. That is the perfection part. If you live only half the unlived part goes on hankering to be lived.
Osho also responds to a number of questions on various subjects including religion , education , awareness , greed, psychoanalysis and politics. Parables , anecdotes, limericks and simple jokes are often used by him for making his talks understandable to the audience. He often mocks at the very nature of the human character. A limerick included in the book is like this:

There was an old man from Darjeeling
Who was traveling from Hyde Park to Ealing
A sign on th door
Said "Don't spit on the floor"
So he carefully spat on the ceiling.

Time and again Osho cracks jokes at the expense of politicians. One such joke:

A politician asked a psychiatrist: "Tell me, how do you know when a person is insane?"
Psychiatrist: "Well, firstly I ask them questions that an average person can answer easily. For example 'if Captain Cook made five trips around the world and was killed on one of them, which one was it?'"
Politician: Ah...Well... Couldn't you ask me a question on another subject? I'am not good at history."

There is no need to mention the poetic beauty and simplicity of Osho 's style and presentation. The ideas presented in this book can influence the very thought process of the reader. I like this book very much - an interesting book to read .
